Al-Makura: Salary Cut, No Going Back

Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has said he would not reverse the directive on the downward review of workers’ salary in the state, in view of the current economic meltdown affecting the country at large.

Al-Makura made this known on Wednesday when he played host to top government functionaries who paid him Sallah homage at Government House, Lafia.

The governor said the downward review has become imperative considering the dwindling revenue accruing to the state. He stressed that he could not continue to vote a large chunk of the state’s resources as pay for workers, who constitute just 1 per cent of the state’s population.

Al-Makura, who decried the high rate of unemployment in the country in general, said if workers’ salary were reviewed downward, opportunities would be created for unemployed graduates.

The governor called on workers to accept the new template in good faith and return to work in the interest of the peace in the state.
