Donald Trump garnered enough delegates to officially be
named the GOP presidential nominee.
On Tuesday – day two of the Republican National Convention –
Trump was awarded the final delegates needed to reach the mandatory 1,237
minimum, as a number of states handed him majority of their delegates, although
dozens did go to his Republican primary competitors Ted Cruz and John Kasich.
Ultimately, it was Trump's home state of New York, announced
by his son Donald Trump Jr., which gave him the final votes and some extras. "Congratulations Dad, we love you," Donald
Jr. said as he announced his father's 89 votes from the Empire State.
While Trump and his family celebrated the win – with his daughter Ivanka calling the moment "surreal" as she and her brother Donald teared up – not all were happy about the announcement. "This is an outrage, and this is a reason the Republican Party is turning off a lot of voters," a D.C. delegate who voted for Kasich reportedly told MSNBC.Such a great honor to be the Republican Nominee for President of the United States. Still, Trump took to Twitter to celebrate his victory. "Such a great
honor to be the Republican Nominee for President of the United States. I
will work hard and never let you down! AMERICA FIRST," he wrote.
While the family was in the spotlight, Donald Jr. chose to shed some
light on Melania Trump's speech snafu from the previous night, telling
CBS News that any similarities between Melania and Michelle Obama's
speech were caused by speechwriters, although Melania previously stated
that she worked on the piece with "as little help as possible."
"I imagine there's people who shouldn't have done that or who should
have cleaned it up better," he said. "Having never done this before you
have to work with speechwriters. Those are the people that did this."
