My Opinion: Social Media Vs Self Isolation by C. Promise Emmanuel
Social Media Vs Self Isolation
A Social Media research recently published shows that: There's an improving risk of managing self status and personality due to the divergent audience and expectations from the multi-origin and class of friends accumulated overtime on social media.
The resultant effect is that the social media landscape is altering how people perceive themselves when they interact with others. There is a growing perfume of competition to meet the expectation(s) of the diverse audience maintained. People now adjust to suit the nature of their audience members, consciously and subconsciously. New traits are acquired overtime.
Have a life outside Social Media, have real friends after social media. Let your reality be more interesting than this artificial reality. Don't escape the real world by isolating yourself into social media dependence. There is a communication theory that explains this phenomenon.
Some people have gained some sort of mirage self-importance by the number of posts they make, likes, friends etc. While social media gives us a platform for intellectual coitus, don't forget to check it with reality.
People are now confident on social media platforms than reality. They have become who they wished they were in reality on social media.
Many make-believe pictures of who are they are constantly nurtured as well. Many people paint the gloriousness of their character and look for the next stray friend to become judgemental, using it to escape their own real life issues.
Many timid, low-self esteemed individuals have also used social media as an escape for their state. They have created a home for themselves with themselves. They trust the virtual space than their real life. They express themselves on social media than real life. They follow popular trends and can even hurt real life friends just to tag along.
Social media has also made it difficult for people to express their true opinions as against popular opinion. Sandra Ball Rokeach, (1975) explains that with the "Spiral of Silence" theory.
The other bangwagon are the social media art sellers. Those who do social-self- marketing with pictures. Many edited pictures of daily appearance is regularly posted on their walls to seek validation for their audience members. To some who do this damage to themselves, they find it a way of gaining feathers for their self-esteem, but the shortfall of this trend is that the same picture channel can be used to destroy their self esteem. If peradventure a picture is posted that does not conform to the general validation of most persons in their walls, they withdraw into sulking and are left disappointed with that appearance for that day.
The media landscape is a new area and distinguished communication scholars and fledging scholar are into studies to generate answers on how to cope with its challenges. We have overtime noticed from various studies that social media contributes to boredom, depression, isolation, low self esteem, arrogance, laziness and even unproductivity. It is recommended therefore that unless you interact with social media to generate academic learnings, income etc, take breaks at intervals to detoxify yourself and figure out your reality. The mass media is so strong that it influences our lives without us noticing.
Don't believe everything and everybody you see here, just like a movie, it is another acted script. Be careful with how you attach your self esteem and heart to this media.
